Air Force Academy promotes oral health campaign

The Air Force Academy (AFA) promoted, between 25 and 28/04, an oral health campaign, which benefited more than 1000 children, aged 0 to 13, from five schools in Pirassununga (SP). The program included lectures on the proper way to perform oral hygiene and to avoid cavities and inflammation of the gums.

On this occasion, lieutenant stomatology Ana Luísa Botta Martins de Oliveira, Pediatric Dentist at the Pirassununga Health Group (GSAU-YS), commented that prevention has proven to be the best way to control diseases with the aim of promoting health and education. “The role that education plays as an agent of social transformation is obvious and allows concepts to be learned and healthy habits to be introduced into the daily life of citizens in training, avoiding the need for invasive treatments,” he emphasized.

To capture the attention of such a diverse audience, Lt. Dentist Botta used playful activities using puppets, macro models, music and interaction, promoting active participation with games for younger children. In addition to the previous approaches, videos and a lecture with a broader language focusing on the importance of oral health for pre-adolescents were also published.

According to Lorena Borelli Dias, a student at Nossa Senhora do Loreto State School, the action was quite enlightening. “I didn’t know that lack of oral hygiene could make us sick. That’s why I think this conversation is very important, because many children, like me, don’t know this and sometimes they don’t even brush their teeth properly,” he said.

Also according to Lieutenant Dentist Botta, the acquisition of healthy habits occurs in childhood and continues throughout life. “Parents, as educators, should pay attention to the growth and development of their children, guiding the correct use of dental floss, washing and eating habits, as oral health is also important for systemic health. Moreover, periodic monitoring by the dentist is extremely important and this awareness results in full health”, he concluded.
