Fear in the Air: Planes almost collide mid-flight

A new survey by travel website Expedia has found that air travel is more stressful for many Americans these days than filing taxes or going to the dentist.
OnePoll, a market research company, surveyed 1,000 US air travelers from August 23-29.
It found that 55% of respondents cited air travel as the top cause of stress, according to a Sept. 27 press release from Expedia.
the Americans looked air travel as “scarier than filing taxes or visiting the dentist,” the survey said.

“In terms of stress levels, booking your next flight shouldn’t be on par with filling a cavity,” Melanie Fish, head of public affairs for Expedia Group Brands, said in Wednesday’s press release. .
“The good news is many of the things that contribute to travel stress are improving,” she added. Expedia, she said, recently launched price monitoring and price drop protection tools.

In an effort to ease the stress of air travel, Expedia released a 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report on Wednesday, offering tips and tricks to make a trip to the airport as smooth (and inexpensive) as possible.
Those looking to travel domestically should book about a month before their flight for the best price, Expedia suggested.

Travelers who booked 28 days in advance saved 24% more than those who booked at the last minute, Expedia said.
This saving of 24% represents an increase compared to previous years.
In 2022, last-minute travelers paid just 10% more than those who planned ahead, the company noted.

For those traveling internationally, Expedia recommends booking 60 days, or about two months, ahead of time.

International airfares tend to drop about four months before a flight.
For all flights, Sunday was the cheapest day to fly, Expedia noted.
Friday, the company said, was the most expensive.
With an increasing number of airline delays occurring recently, the company also provided advice on how to improve the chances of a flight leaving on time – or leaving at all.

“Flights departing after 3pm statistically have a 50% higher chance of cancellation than earlier flights,” Expedia said.
Maryland-based psychologist Dr. Mary Alvord told Fox News Digital that Americans can find air travel stressful because it is often associated with other anxiety-inducing situations, such as feeling out of control.
“Airline travel is filled with unpredictable aspects, from getting to the airport on time and through security lines to worries about delayed or canceled flights, many of which are beyond our control,” Alvord told Fox News. Digital.

Some people, she said, are “anxious fliers” – and worry about being uncomfortable during a flight or experiencing a “big hiccup in the air or landing”.

“Also, travel during vacations brings more potential concerns about family gatherings, loss and conflict,” Alvord said.
“All of these uncertainties add up to considerable stress and anxiety,” she said.
