Amazon doesn’t adopt technology just because it’s “cool,” the idea is to provide solutions for customers, its CEO says

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said his company doesn’t embrace technological development — including AI — just because it’s cold.

“The way we think about technology — this also applies to AI — is that we don’t use it because we think it’s good, we use it because we’re trying to solve problems for our customers,” Jassy said during his AWS attendance re: Invent, in Las Vegas.

“We prioritize technology that we think our customers will really care about, and with the explosion of generative AI in recent years, we’ve taken the same approach. “There’s a ton of innovation, but what we’re trying to do is solve problems for you,” he explained.

Jassy highlighted practical uses of AI such as implementing Rufus — its chatbot that already provides personalized recommendations to its users in the United States — improving the operation of its distribution centers or its drone delivery program.

“That’s why when we talk about AI, it’s usually less about announcing that we beat the best chess player in the world,” he said.

AWS is Amazon’s subsidiary dedicated to cloud computing services. Despite being a leader in that sector, many believe that it took a while to launch its generative AI tools, an area in which OpenIA surprised the world a few years ago with its ChatGPT.

The e-commerce giant’s manager admitted that “it’s actually quite difficult to build a good AI-generating app.”

On Tuesday Jassy announced the launch of Amazon Nova, a new series of generative AI models with which it will seek to be an alternative to OpenAI or Google models, with Gemini.
