Amazon’s Aragon data centers will have 1,000 workers when their expansion is complete

Amazon Web Services (AWS) expects to staff its three data centers in Aragon to consist of a thousand workers when its macro-expansion ends in ten years. The technology multinational has specified to this newspaper the direct employment that will be created with its expansion.facilities in El Burgo de Ebro, Villanueva de Gállego and Huesca and the launch of a new complex in Zaragoza, adjacent to the industrial estate Empresarium, in the so-called Acampo del Marqués and which will be the largest of all.

The deployment will include an announced investment of €15.7 billion to create the largest data enclave on the European continent. The official estimate was limited to 6,800 direct and indirect jobs that were expected to be generated in Aragon with their activity when the company’s plans were presented last May, but now it has specified that nearly 15% of those workers will do so in their premises to be completed. In total, 17,500 full-time, direct and indirect positions are expected to be created each year across the country.

The technology division has also revealed other information that it guarded with absolute zeal, that of the employees it currently has in the three data centers that were launched two years ago. This is what official sources say The number varies on average from 60 to 200 workers per facility “depending on the type of building and the activity” performed.

Its development is already generating significant employment, as is the case of the company Huesca Levitec, specialized in electrical and air conditioning installations in Spain, as well as in renewable sources, and which is responsible for equipping data centers . This has helped increase the workforce to more than 300 people, while the technology company Hiberus has consolidated its activity “to the extent of increasing its teams providing services with AWS solutions to 200 professionals”. Likewise, it alludes to the expansion of DXC Technology, which already has more than 1,500 employees in Zaragoza and the consolidation of Seidor, with its first competence center specializing in AWS cloud computing solutions.

For their operation, the data centers have an authorized power of 1,200 megawatts and the forecast is to triple it to reach 2,900. Of course, it is pending that the Ministry of Ecological Transition calls for tenders to determine access to the supply with electricity in five of the nodes of the transport network in Zaragoza and its metropolitan environment. The avalanche of data centers has ended up exceeding its capacity, and even the planned expansions in the short term will not be enough to meet its huge consumption needs, which completely affects AWS.

Water consumption

What is not a problem is the water supply. Currently searching 50,000 cubic meters per center, equivalent in total to 19 hectares of irrigation and expects to reach 865,103 cubic meters per year when all are at full capacity. The figure is still far behind the main industrial consumer, Saica, with 26 million cubic meters.
