The data are alarming: it is estimated that early childhood caries (ECC)popularly known as baby bottle teething, comes close 600 million children worldwide. In most cases, it remains untreated. The information comes from the IAPD – the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry – and is published in an article on International Journal of Pediatric Dentistryin 2019.
In order to evaluate these data and promote a reduction in the number of cases, it is essential to present the origin of the problem.
Currently, it is known that the main causes of the spread of bacteria in the oral flora and, consequently, the appearance of cavities are: biological factorssuch as poor oral hygiene; behavioral factors, such as abuse of sweets and finger sucking; AND psychosocial factorsrepresented by the part of the population that does not have access to necessary hygiene items, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The last wash of the day: the most important
It is during sleep that the body reduces the production of saliva. The decrease in this flow of saliva to the mouth combined with the lack of brushing at night creates the ideal scenario for demineralization of teeth.
In other words, the mouth becomes a sensitive environment the spread of bacteriamainly because it gets warmer during sleep.
If the child does not brush his teeth before bed, this process causes the tooth structure to deteriorate night after night. And the result can be hollow.
It is important to mention that, even if the teeth are replaced between the end of childhood and the beginning of adolescence, it is essential to promote the health of the baby teeth, since they are responsible for preparing and maintaining the space necessary for the acquisition of permanent teeth. Besides, of course, it helps the child’s chewing, speech, aesthetics and self-esteem.
