Colgate creates movement to fight tooth shortages in Brazil

Colgate launches the national movement “Together against toothlessness”, which aims to raise awareness in society about the extent of oral health deficiency in Brazil, a problem little discussed in the country. And the focus of the movement is the fight against tooth decay, the most common non-communicable disease in the world that affects thousands of Brazilians, especially children and teenagers.

The campaign agenda includes actions to distribute kits, guidance from professionals, availability of educational materials on oral health and community mobilization. Lack of teeth is the lack of prevention and treatment of tooth decay, the most widespread non-communicable disease in the world and responsible for the appearance of several other complications. Moreover, it is the cause of loss of quality of life and other oral problems for Brazilians from different social classes.

According to the Global Burden of Disease study, untreated permanent dental caries affects 2.4 billion people worldwide (35% of the global population) and 530 million children (¼ of the global child population) in their teeth. milk teeth). Data from the Ministry of Health’s National Oral Health Survey show that cavities are one of the main oral health problems in the country today: 53.4% ​​of children up to 5 years old had a tooth affected by cavities, 76.1% of young people . between 15 and 19 years old had a tooth affected by cavities, and 99.1% of adults aged 35 to 44 years had a tooth affected by cavities.

Dental caries is a persistent public health condition present throughout Brazil. According to the National Oral Health Survey (BRAZIL, 2010), 17.2 million, equivalent to 52% of children aged zero to nine, have never been seen in a dental office. These data show that most Brazilians, especially children and adolescents, face significant challenges related to oral health, including untreated cavities and lack of access to adequate dental care.

Colgate translates its ongoing commitment to promoting oral health into a variety of practical actions that help fight cavities. The Brilliant Future Healthy Smile program, for example, was launched in 1994 in Brazil with the goal of educating children about the importance of oral hygiene and encouraging healthy practices from an early age by providing oral hygiene equipment and educational materials. More than 20 million children have already been positively impacted by the program over the years from 2013 to March 2024.
