The dentistry market is constantly growing, research shows that the demand for professionals in this field is increasing worldwide. The Irish company Research and Markets illustrated an average annual investment growth in the area of 5.59% since 2018. This makes the forecast for the end of 2023 at about 35.7 billion US dollars.
In Brazil, it is no different. According to IESS (Institute for Supplementary Health Studies), in 2020 the number of dental procedures was 154 million and in 2021 the number increased to 174 million. The study also shows that in 2021 Brazilians invested R$ 3.2 billion in dental care. This research is – often – motivated by aesthetics, according to specialist Renato Trezza, specialist in aesthetic and rehabilitative dentistry, director of Dental Studio Rio and head of opinion at EMS (Electro Medical System).
“The most requested treatments are the so-called restorative rehabilitation treatments. In other words, patients with aesthetic complaints often require some kind of repair”, explains the specialist. “We cannot leave aside, therefore, preventive treatments, which aim at both aesthetics and oral health as a whole, since teeth are not the only component of the mouth, we have e.g. soft tissues and gums. Therefore, we dentists educate patients a lot about prevention,” he adds.
However, the biggest tip for those who want to maintain oral aesthetics is prevention. Renato Trezza explains that aesthetic complaints can be rooted in some other problem and this can only be observed through a specific assessment. Moreover, three pillars are taken into account in this process: health, aesthetics and functionality.
According to the specialist, all restorative treatment goes to the stage of clinical analysis, with preliminary examinations and from this moment, the case is subjected to an evaluation, based on the pillars mentioned above. “This process takes into account the patient’s complaint and their real needs to determine the most appropriate treatment, as there are times when the patient wants something that is not replicable for them. Moreover, there are cases when there is an aesthetic complaint, which is actually caused by some other health or functional factor”, explains Trezza.
Another important factor is that each individual is unique, so they need personalized treatment that fits their needs. “Each patient has different needs, so they have the right recommendation. There is a myth, for example, that a visit to the dentist should be done every 6 months for all patients. In some cases, the ideal frequency may be annual, in others, there should be at least four annual consultations. Everything changes according to the real need”, emphasizes the specialist.
The importance of prevention
Part of this preventive process is also prophylaxis, which has to do with cleaning the teeth and is of fundamental importance in oral health. For this procedure, there is an innovative, personalized, efficient and painless technology, called GBT protocol – Guided Biofilm Therapy, by EMS, which acts both in the dentist’s action and in the education and guidance of the patient. “The GBT protocol came to help a lot, both because it is something protocol, that allows us to direct and guide the patient, guiding them in the right way, and as a tool to motivate them, to provide more information and better quality. Trezza reports.
For this to happen, the procedure relies on a highlighter – a product that shows the places where washing is most needed. “Using the highlighter, we can show the patient the regions that need the most care. With this guidance, the patient returns to the next appointments more motivated and with a cleaner appearance of the mouth, as he had a clear perception of the aspects that needed to be improved. This factor directly affects oral care”, explains stomatology.
It is also worth noting that daily care is an important part of maintaining oral health, risking its success and longevity. Everything starts with the patient’s instructions, given by the dentist, regarding the care to be done at home, such as the type of paste or the type of toothbrush and the brushing technique, which are essential.
The specialist emphasizes the importance of this factor: “The first basic point for the efficient performance of aesthetic restorative dentistry is health: oral, periodontal and gingival. This is mainly due to an adaptation process, where the GBT protocol comes into play in an extremely efficient way. With its use, a real and effective change in the patient’s aesthetics can be observed”, he explains.
Finally, it is necessary to remember that aesthetics is a consequence of oral health care and can only be achieved with frequent care. It is not possible to separate the health from the beauty of the teeth, as cosmetic dentistry is a group of factors that lead to perfection, not a single factor. Therefore, the perception of the whole is very important, especially because health starts from the mouth and can be seen as a consequence of concern for prevention and patient education.
