FUQUAY-VARINA – Wake County leaders were all smiles Wednesday as they “cut the ribbon” on the grand opening of the third free children’s dental clinic, which is now part of the region’s Regional Smiles program.

In addition to Raleigh and Wake Forest, a third location is available in Fuquay-Varina that offers free dental exams, teeth cleanings, X-rays and fluoride applications to those under 20 who do not have insurance.

“October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and what better way to celebrate than to expand access to this vital program at another of our Wake County regional centers, giving parents and caregivers easy options for children’s dental health theirs?” said Wake County Board of Commissioners Vice Chair Susan Evans. “Poor oral health is linked to chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, so (by) teaching children the importance of taking care of their smiles when they’re young, as well as providing needed access to care, we can ensure they are on the right track for a healthy lifestyle when they grow up.”

This newest clinic within the county’s Southern Regional Center in Fuquay-Varina will offer monthly dental appointments. It is part of a program designed to help increase access to health in underserved areas of the county.

Started in 2017 with the Smiles at Sunnybrook Award, the program is funded by the NC Office of Rural Health. This clinic, located on Sunnybrook Road in Raleigh inside the Wake County Public Health Center, has helped more than 5,200 children since it opened.

The program continued to expand with monthly dental clinics at the Northern Wake County Regional Center in Wake Forest this February. After the new clinic in Fuquay-Varina, county leaders are now considering opening a location at the Wake County Eastern Regional Center in Zebulon.

Smiles Regional Clinics offer free exams, cleanings, fluoride applications, X-rays and education.

“Dental checkups for children are essential to maintaining their oral health, and regular visits help detect and prevent dental problems early, ensuring children have healthy teeth and gums as they grow,” said Wake County Dental Director Dr. Rebecca Sykes. “These checkups also establish good oral hygiene habits that can last a lifetime.”

Regional Smiles will be available by appointment only. Visits can be scheduled by calling 919-250-4610 between 8 am and 5 pm weekdays. To learn more about Wake County dental clinics, visit wake.gov/smiles.
