The Dental Reference Service for People with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism is carrying out this Saturday (9), a group of care and operations at the Piauí Military Police Hospital (HPM), in Teresina. The objective is to eliminate the waiting list for dental treatment, at the tertiary level, for people who require care with sedation or general anesthesia.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Amparo Veloso, director of the HPM Dental Service, eight patients will be treated, starting at 7 am, at the surgical center, where procedures such as prophylaxis, fluoride application, restorations and extractions will be performed. “The service benefits patients with severe cognitive impairment who do not understand that they will be treated in an outpatient setting,” explains the director.

The secretary of Seid, Mauro Eduardo, said that the service is very important in the life and health of those who need a special kind of care. “We know that people with autism and intellectual disabilities have difficulties in dental treatment, as they often need sedation, and here we have this whole structure set up to serve them better, with all the necessary security”, he reinforced the secretary.

The project is an initiative of the Government of Piauí, through the Secretariat for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (Seid), the Secretariat of Health (Sesapi) and the Piauí Military Police Hospital (HPM).
