Non-invasive procedures can be performed by dentists specializing in cosmetic dentistry
According to the report published by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an American journal, the number of non-invasive procedures, such as facial contouring, has increased in recent years, especially in Latin America.
Currently, the aesthetics sector has expanded its field of activity: it is no longer necessary that only plastic surgeons or dermatologists perform procedures aimed at appearance and self-esteem.
The area, in recent years, for example, has professionals with broader knowledge to deal with procedures beyond traditional dentistry. Since 2017, according to information from the SBOE (Brazilian Society of Dentistry and Aesthetics), the sector has grown by around 300% with new treatments and procedures.
For Dr. Cinthia Jorge, a dentist specializing in aesthetics at Rede Odonto, Brazil is a global reference in health fields such as Orthopedics and Aesthetic Dental Treatments. “We have 20% of dentists in the world. Cosmetic dentistry has evolved rapidly, with patients seeking more and more cosmetic and facial procedures,” he adds.
Dental treatments and procedures aimed at aesthetics are diverse, the dentist explains. “In aesthetic dentistry, we have several procedures, including: teeth whitening, supervised whitening, veneers, facial alignment, bicectomy, dental braces, implants and finally plastic surgery of the gums”, he says.
The growth of this field of activity was evident among those working in the health sector. According to the 2019/2020 Trends Notebook, made by Sebrae (Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Businesses) and ABIHPEC (Brazilian Association of the Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry), Brazil represents about 6.9% of the world market and is in 4th in the list of countries with the largest cosmetic dentistry markets.
According to Dr. Cinthia Jorge, cosmetic dentistry has the same objective as traditional dentistry: to enable changes and correct the imperfections that bother those who seek treatment. “But now, there is an even bigger problem, which is promoting good self-esteem and ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of the patient,” he comments.
It is expected that in the following years the dentistry sector will grow even more, enabling new treatments for the aesthetic field. The Research and Markets report shows that expectations are high, it is believed that around US$35.7 billion will be generated by 2023 in the sector, representing approximately 5.59% average annual growth.
