The annual Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo kicked off its weekend with a free Community Kids Day at the Industry Hills Expo Center.
Fourth graders from Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, Rowland Unified School District, and private schools/homeschool groups were invited on Friday, October 13, to break the barrier between text in history books of California and the day-to-day action of a traditional rodeo.
After the mini rodeo, 120-200 students split into groups to learn the ropes from Wranglers, Cowboys, BullFighters and even the Rodeo Clown. Organizers set up four stations: Livestock, blacksmith and farrier work – A blacksmith demonstrated how to make horseshoes and a blacksmith showed students how to put shoes on horses and Livestock transport – how animals take part safely in the rodeo.
According to officials, the Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo is the largest fundraiser for the Gabriel Foundation. The organization’s mission is to invest financially in services, programs, activities and resources specific to disadvantaged children in the Eastern San Gabriel Valley.
“The success of the rodeo has enabled the foundation to award more than $100,000 in grants in each of the past years,” said Janet Fernandez of the Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo.
Grants have been awarded to organizations such as Delhaven Community Center, Industry Sheriff’s Station Youth Activities League, San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health, East San Gabriel Valley YMCA, Friends of the Heart, New Horizons Caregivers Group and the Club of Boys and Girls of the West San Gabriel Valley, according to Fernandez.
The rodeo that followed on Saturday and Sunday hosted competitors from around the country to showcase bull riding, bareback riding, saddle riding and more. It will also feature freestyle motocross and a local student poster art contest.
Wrapping up Saturday’s festivities was a big bash with a live, local deejay.
All proceeds went to the Gabriel Foundation.
