Amazon’s big move into generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is here. The company founded by Jeff Bezos has introduced the new generation of models. It is about Novaa suite of solutions that promise to cover everything from word processing to image and video generation.
Amazon explains that its models have a number of important advantages: they are designed to work in 200 languages and have such performance and efficiency that their use can be much cheaper than equivalent solutions. As we will see below, this point makes a lot of sense for the American giant.
Amazon’s new AI models
We are not facing the launch of a single model capable of performing all the aforementioned tasks, but rather several options with its own characteristics. Each proposition is designed to address specific needs, allowing users to use them independently or in combination for their own generative AI projects.
- Amazon Nova Micro– Text model that focuses on performance, latency and low cost.
- Amazon Nova Lite: multimodal model that allows processing of audio, video and text inputs. It also focuses on low cost and performance.
- Amazon Nova Pro: A state-of-the-art multimodal model that promises to be more accurate and faster on a wide variety of tasks.
- Amazon Nova Premier: the star of Amazon models. Its most advanced propositions are designed to perform tasks that require “reasoning”. It will be available in the first quarter of 2025.
- Amazon Nova Canvas. A model that only generates images.
- Amazon Nova Reel. A model that only generates video.
It seems that Amazon has an answer for all OpenAI products. Without knowing technical details and based on its concepts, Nova Micro seems to be like Amazon’s GPT-3.5 Turbo. The Nova Lite, for its part, apparently competes with the GPT-4o mini, the Nova Pro with the GPT-4o, the Nova Premier with the o1, the Nova Canvas with the DALL·E 3, and the Nova Reel with the Sora.
The variety and performance of Amazon models makes sense for you cloud computing service. Today, AWS is home to a variety of first-party and third-party AI models. It’s no secret that professional users look for the best possible models at the lowest possible price.
This is exactly where Amazon wants to differentiate itself. Now it not only has one of the most important computing infrastructures on the planet, but it has a number of models that show great promise. Its models are available on AWS Bedrock, the company’s AI platform that provides ready-to-use products.
