KCU College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Linda Niessen: Debunking Dental Myths | FSK/CODE

What are some of the most common myths about oral health?

o Brushing harder means cleaner teeth.
It is important to brush your teeth thoroughly (for 2 minutes), however, brushing too much can erode the enamel and cause staining or sensitivity. It can also damage the gums leading to bleeding and gum recession. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid excessive pressure when brushing. (You wouldn’t use a steel wool pad to wash your car, but remove the finish. Same with tooth enamel. You don’t want to wash it.

o Charcoal toothpaste is best. Charcoal toothpaste is marketed for whitening, but in reality, it offers little protection for teeth. When choosing a toothpaste, check the packaging for the seal from the American Dental Association.

o Children do not need to brush their milk teeth.
Baby teeth serve as a retainer for the child’s permanent teeth. Poor oral health can lead to lifelong complications. Parents should help children brush their teeth twice a day as soon as they appear. For babies, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe the front and back of each tooth. o Pregnant mothers should avoid the dentist. It is important to have regular dental checkups during pregnancy. Hormone levels increase during pregnancy, which can cause swollen or bleeding gums.

o Tooth loss is genetic
There is a genetic component to teeth – eg. if you are missing a permanent tooth, it is likely that someone in your family is also missing that tooth.
However, tooth loss is preventable. Just because your grandma or grandpa lost their teeth, you don’t have to.
Tooth loss is usually caused by cavities or gum disease, which can be avoided with proper oral hygiene and regular dental care.
