To enter the orbit, what is a dental implant? “Screw-shaped sanitary titanium piece replacing missing tooth root.” Its composition, titanium, is the same material used in various body surgeries. There are implants made of another material, zirconium, it is also an extremely strong metal, but its biocompatibility is less.

pLANNING

First in the first step, we ask for a panoramic radiograph. With this x-ray we will see how the mouth is as a whole: the bone and its quality, the dental elements, their position, if there is any infection, the progress of caries, the position of the nerve canals, anatomical repairs, among others. According to the needs and possibilities of each patient, we design the method of mouth restoration.

start of treatment

In this half-hour shift, we take intra- and extra-oral photos and make impressions to obtain plaster models of the mouth, for the appropriate study. We give pre-operative medication and set the date and time of the operation.

Surgery

Previously, to place the implants, the gum was cut and separated from the bone, creating a flap, and with the bone exposed, the visible bone, the implants were placed. Implant placement has evolved over the years. In our clinic, we choose to place the implant with a minimally invasive technique.

It consists of making a small hole in the gum and working from there.
Drills with different diameters are passed over the bone where we want to place the implant. After reaching the expected length and diameter, we screw the implant slowly. We remove the implant holder and place a cover. The average duration of operations is one hour. By not separating the gum from the bone, the patient has a pain-free postoperative period and the operation time is shorter.

We give the patient in writing all the recommendations and care they should have. The most important thing is taking the antibiotic in time to avoid infections and relative rest for four days, i.e. staying calm at home.

after surgery

After the operation we waited 3 months for the implant to fuse with the bone. During this time we monitor the patient, first weekly and then monthly. We monitor patients who come from far away on the Internet.

Prosthetic step

Depending on what we have planned, it will change. But in general we have two types of treatments: fixed crowns on implants, partially removable prostheses.

Crowns fixed to implants are porcelain crowns that remain in the mouth as if they were the patient’s own teeth. Porcelain does not undergo changes in color, shape or size over time.

A partially removable prosthesis is a prosthesis that is attached to the implants by means of a pressure system, preventing it from moving. Its material is acrylic, after about 20 years we have to renew it.
