When approaching children with autism spectrum disorders, what techniques should a health care professional use to provide the best care? This is one of the topics that will be discussed in VI Trips of the Pediatric Integrated Dental Clinic, dedicated to “Children with specific needs”.
The event, which takes place this Saturday, in The CESPU Famalicão Academic Campus will have the participation of “prestigious and well-known” professionals from different fields who deal with pediatric patients on a daily basis.
In the statements for Only NewsThe Chair of the Conferences, Teresa Vale stomatology, emphasizes that “it is not very common that this topic is debated as the only point of the Scientific Conferences within Dental Medicine”.
However, he considers that, “due to the need for deepening the knowledge and experience of treating these children in a clinical environment, it seems appropriate to approach this topic”.
The idea was born in the context of the 18th edition of the postgraduate course at the Integrated Pediatric Dental Clinic at CESPU – Polytechnic and University Higher Education Cooperative, where Teresa Vale is a teacher and director of the curricular unit of the Pediatric Dental Clinic, proposed from the students who attend it”.

“Techniques that allow you to interact with children”
The CESPU professor points out that “behavior control is, in itself, a challenge in the clinical practice of Dental Medicine, especially in Pediatric Dentistry”.
Thus, in children with autism spectrum disorder, “the challenge becomes evident, due to the fact that these children have difficulties in communication and social interaction, making it necessary to master the techniques that allow them to interact with these children during the consultation of Pediatric Dentistry “. .
Pediatric dentists, dentists and family doctors
The meeting is open to all professionals interested in this topic, even to the general public. However, they are particularly aimed at pediatric dentists and dentists.
Family doctors will also be able to benefit from this training, namely “facilitating the referral to the pediatric dentist to take care of the oral health of these children with an emphasis on prevention”.

Postgraduate with “an integrated approach”
The event takes place within the framework of the 18th edition of the Postgraduate in the Integrated Pediatric Dental Clinic, which began in October 2022, “but since 2008 this postgraduate has been taking place, with a very positive balance, including, in some years there have been two editions being developed simultaneously”, says Teresa Vale.
And adds: “This postgraduate course aims to provide an integrated approach both in terms of the proposed topics developed in theory, as well as at the clinical level and with other specialties”.
