Russell Benfield (Ben) Mosier, Jr., DDS, CAPT, DC, USNR (Ret), 88, passed away peacefully on October 14 in Northeast. Ben loved his family and friends, young and old. He will be greatly missed by all.
Ben was born in Corry, PA on December 26, 1934, the son of the late Dr. Russell B. Mosier, Sr., and Ethel E. (Jenkins) Mosier. He graduated from Corry High School in 1952 and attended Thiel College, serving as president of Delta Sigma Phi. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1959, where he met his future wife Judith Seanor Mosier. They were married for 46 years until her death in 2006.
Ben entered the service as a Dental Ensign in 1959 and served in Jacksonville, FL and Okinawa. After active duty, he joined the US Naval Reserves and retired with the rank of captain after 26 years of service.
In 1962, Ben and Judy moved to the Northeast and took over the dental practice of Dr. Sam Anderson. He practiced dentistry for nearly 40 years, becoming a Fellow and Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and serving as President of the Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry. He developed several innovations in dental equipment, including floss holders and plastic autoclaving trays.
Ben was a lifelong golfer and gardener. After retiring from full-time dentistry, Ben devoted his time to volunteering, including providing dental services at the St. Paul to Erie. He has driven patients for 20 years and over 100,000 miles for the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program. He served on the McCord Memorial Library board, the North East Township Water and Sewer board and the North East Jaycees among other civic volunteer positions.
Ben is preceded in death by his wife, Judith Seanor Mosier. He is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Hansen (Michael) of Alexandria, VA, Amy Michael (Bryan) of Burlingame, CA and Kathleen Mosier of Norfolk, VA; a son, Russell B. Mosier III (Carolyn) of Falls Church, VA; and eight grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Ben IV, Joshua, Vivian, Rebecca, David, Charlie and Judy.
His family is very grateful to the staff at Parkside North East and Community Nursing Services North East for all they did to make his last year comfortable, engaging and fun.
Friends will be received at the W. Tad Bowers Funeral Home, 92 S. Lake St., North East, on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. and are invited to attend funeral services on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Park United Methodist Church, Pastor Eric Leonard officiating. Burial will be in the Northeast Cemetery.
