We hear a lot about Sorriso Maroto because of their famous songs since the 90s, but few people know that apart from playing the shrine, the band is dedicated to a social cause. A little over a year ago, Bruno Cardoso, Sérgio Jr., Cris, Fred and Vinícius decided to help those in need and started the Spreading Sorrisos project. The cause aims to bring dental treatment to low-income people.
To that end, the musicians have used the Sorriso As Antigas tour, which has a record attendance, to put the generosity into action. A portion of the proceeds from the tour are donated to the project, which also collects non-perishable food items. The success of this show was so great that the artists will perform again in Brazil in 2024.
“In terms of health, keep your teeth healthy and prevent serious diseases, such as myocarditis. Although the cause has not yet been discovered in my case, we know that infection through the tooth canal is common”, said Bruno, lead singer of Sorriso Maroto, exclusively for the Fábia Oliveira column. The singer, who had a heart problem in 2018, recalled the disease, myocarditis, and emphasized that one of the causes could be a dental disease.
Since Christmas is a time to celebrate love for others, peace, love and kindness, this reporter brings an exclusive conversation with Sorriso Maroto about the action that has already raised more than R$1.1 million and 10 tons of food. Look!

Where and how did the idea for the Spreading Sorrisos project come about?
Using music as a vehicle for transformation into epic action was a long-standing desire of the group. The initial idea was to include acts like Espalhando Sorrisos in the AMA project, recorded before the pandemic, in February. In that project, the idea was to use the reach of our music, the audience and the show’s reach together to help, in some way, those in need. But the pandemic postponed our project started in 2020. But the desire became even more latent. The first big opportunity we had to go back and normalize the shows was to put down on paper our desire, our dream to use music to transform lives.
Obviously, the motivation of the project comes from the group’s name, however, what is the significance of these smiles returned by the group’s action? How does it feel to literally help people smile?
Transforming lives is the goal. Smiling affects self-esteem, affects people’s mood. On the health side, keeping teeth healthy and preventing serious diseases, such as myocarditis, a disease I had in 2018. Although the cause of my case has not yet been discovered, we know that infection through the tooth canal is usual.
In Salvador, for example, there was a huge mobilization of donations. How did the band react to the public joining the cause en masse with you?
The public is increasingly realizing that the show Sorriso As Antigas is not just entertainment. The social nature is more and more present in the present audience and that is fantastic.
What are the numbers and results of the actions?
We closed the year balance this week and the numbers are:
– In cash: R$ 1,197,583.00
– Tons of food: 10.5
This is the first time you are doing a social project of this kind. Do you intend to continue the As Antigas tour in 2024?
This is a project that we are very proud of and that drives us. We are focused on making it grow, reaching even more needy and needy countries.
Why was As Antigas chosen to realize the social project?
Because of the moment. It’s a monumental year for the band, in the biggest project of our lives. There is no better time.
Sorriso turned 26 years old. What are the expectations for the second season of this As Antigas show, long awaited by the public?
The public introduced us in a way we didn’t even expect. This tour far exceeded our average audience numbers and the demand for requests for more shows only grows. Initially, we did a show for an average of 10,000 attendees. At this show, tickets were sold out in 27 minutes. We did a second edition for an audience of approximately 20,000 and that too sold out. At the end of the sequence of shows, we already had an average of 35 thousand people present, with a record audience of approximately 50 thousand people, in Belo Horizonte. With that we increased our structure, filmed the whole tour and are going back on the road with this new show that was filmed in Salvador, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte. In 2024, we will find ourselves even more prepared to welcome all those who enjoyed it with us and also those who will go for the first time.
What was the motive of this “reunion” of the ancients with the public? Were there any key changes to give fans? Or was it the return to the “past” that resulted in the project of a repertoire with only songs of the past?
We are a band that has been making music for just over two decades. We have gone through generations and transformations in the use and consumption of music in the country and in the world and we owe it to the public to stay in this direction even today. And nothing fairer than building this legacy with them, giving them gifts, doing something for them.
What message do you leave to the public, so that they know about this project and, most importantly, where and how to donate.
What we leave our audience with is the gratitude that they trust us as the mouthpiece for their emotions and above all the trust that we have been given to realize the dream of transforming lives through music and what it has to offer. To donate at this time, just attend the show Sorriso As Antigas, buying the ticket is already part of this great chain (a part of all the income from this group tour goes to the project).
What are Sorriso Maroto’s expectations for 2024?
Bring love and joy to people. Spreading smiles (literally) is our mission.
