Tampa dentist says Botox treatments are life-changing for some patients

Dr. Maureen Georgy of Ideal Dentistry said Botox works for some patients.

When patients go to see their dentist it’s not always for a teeth cleaning, sometimes it’s for Botox.

“Oh, I have grinding muscle fatigue, clenching, jammed jaw. That’s why I take it,” said Natalie Burkette.

“It’s going to help relax that muscle. It reprograms the muscle to be in a more relaxed position. So then when you grind and tighten, you’re not going to be able to contract that muscle as much,” explained Dr. Maureen Georgy of Ideal Dentistry.

Dr. Georgy said that while some may be surprised to hear about dentists using Botox, it’s actually a natural fit.

“We have a lot of experience with this, with the functions of the head and neck muscles,” said Dr. Georgy.

Burkette said for her, Botox was a better option than other treatments.

The needles are small and relatively painless.

“There’s massage. You can take muscle relaxers for the pressure on the teeth. You can be a night watchman. But I do it all day, so I need something that helps ease what I do,” Burkette shared.

Procedures can be quite quick, and the needles are small.

“It’s like not even a pinch,” explained Dr. Georgy.

“Relatively painless,” Burkette said.

Burkette hopes these treatments will save her from more pain and discomfort in the future.

“The more you get it, like, you know, hopefully it will relax your muscles long term so I won’t have to do it every three to four months,” Burkette said.

“My patients think it’s life-changing because they’re pain-free. They’re actually able to eat and function. Every patient I’ve had this done, they’ve loved it and seen so many benefits,” said Dr. George.
