The Doctorate in Dentistry is the first in the area in the state of Piauí and was approved after the Postgraduate Program reached point 4 in the last four-year evaluation by the Coordination for the Improvement of the Personnel of Higher Education (CAPES).
The UFPI received a visit from the CAPES Dentistry coordinator, Manoel Damião de Sousa Neto, and Professor Maria Fidela de Lima Navarro, considered an international reference in research in this area. The visit took place on Tuesday (14).
Rector of UFPI, Gildásio Guedes; vice rector, Viriato Campelo; Vice Chancellor of Planning and Budget, Luís Carlos Sales; and the representative of the Dean of Postgraduate Education, Francisco Tarso Caselli, welcomed the guests in the Noble Hall of the Rectorate, accompanied by the coordinator of PPG in Dentistry, Marcoeli Silva de Moura; deputy coordinator, Cacilda Castelo Branco Lima; and other teachers in the program.

The dean spoke of his pleasure in receiving the guests and praised the professors of UFPI for their dedication to the consolidation of PPG in Dentistry. “We had the visit of two references in the area brought by the professors and the holding of major events, such as the Meeting of the North-Eastern and Northern Association of Dental Research and the Academic Day of Dentistry at UFPI. We bring together news of good grades, good conferences, and the work of our academic community to improve our institution. Our feeling is gratitude”, he emphasized.

According to the area coordinator of Dentistry in CAPES, Manoel Damião de Sousa Neto, the UFPI PPG is very important for the Coordination and for the area. “For us in the field of Dentistry, this is a very important historical moment in the northern and northeastern region. This program is on an upward trajectory. I believe that with local programs, with the quality of the pedagogical framework that is already recognized by us and a park of equipment in an adequate infrastructure, the tendency is to make great progress”, he emphasized.
For researcher Maria Fidela Navarro, professor emeritus at the University of São Paulo, the program will be important for training young leaders. “These leaders will look at the needs of society and, sometimes, they will propose some measures that have not yet been seen. So, this dialogue is necessary and postgraduate studies create this favorable environment for the necessary changes to take place for the progress of society. I see it with great pleasure and wish all the best to the group involved in this initiative.”
The coordinator of PPG in Dentistry, Marcoeli Silva de Moura, emphasized that the visit of the CAPES area coordinator was important so that he could learn about the program and lead the team involved in this start of the course. She also emphasized the importance of the meeting with the dean. “No program can move forward without institutional support. We have had a master’s course for 12 years, we have trained 110 masters and we need to move forward with the doctoral course and for this we need institutional support”, he emphasized.
After the meeting at the Rectory, the guests visited the PPG and talked with the students of the program.
