The Federal Council of Dentistry requires dental surgeons in hospitals

The Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) seeks to resume, from this year onwards, the fight for the mandatory presence of dental surgeons in hospitals throughout the country. The topic should be addressed at the official launch of the Parliamentary Front for Dentistry, coordinated by MP Carlos Henrique Gaguim (União-TO), scheduled to be held in April.

The presence of dental professionals in intensive care units and other hospital units is considered essential for the prevention of nosocomial infection cases. A dental surgeon is the professional trained to identify and treat potential points of infection in patients’ teeth and gums, reducing the risk of complications due to contamination.

The obligation was provided for in PL 883/2019, which was voted on and approved. However, the proposal was not sanctioned by then-President Jair Bolsonaro and, going back to the plenary session, the dental surgeons did not receive enough votes to overturn the veto.

The project was reintroduced in this legislature and gains strength with the official creation of the Hospital Dentistry specialty, which took place in 2023. Efforts to support the cause must begin now. “A new bill is being processed in the National Congress and now the CFO, together with other entities representing Brazilian dentistry, will make the necessary efforts, with the support of the Parliamentary Front, so that the proposal is approved again and this times to be sanctioned.“, emphasizes the president of the CFO, Juliano do Vale.
