The State of Dentistry – Newspaper

The state of higher education in the field of dentistry in Pakistan is quite deplorable. Besides, there is no career infrastructure, jobs and opportunities for hundreds of dental graduates and postgraduates who join the stream every year. Not every graduate has the means to pursue higher education, or to set up an expensive private practice. And, in any case, there is no point in setting up a private clinic without having the proper professional hands-on exposure.

Merit in terms of selecting deserving, hardworking and dedicated candidates to serve the people remains questionable at best. Almost 15 years after graduation and about 10 years of training for the main postgraduate specialization, I still feel insecure and insecure about my professional career.

I have cleared four written exams of Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) and one of Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC). Apart from this, I have appeared in dozens of tests and interviews related to employment in various colleges, hospitals and even non-governmental organizations (NGOs). I still haven’t found a suitable place to work and I’m continuing with a low-paying, low-end private dispensary.

I would like to set up my own clinic, but I do not have the resources to do so. I’m also worried about postgraduate training, which will go to waste because I can’t find anywhere to use my surgical skills.

I have spent a lot of money on paying the exam fee, as well as managing transportation, notes, books, internet and workshops, as well as fulfilling all the residency and exam requirements. I am dedicated to my work, but all this means nothing to anyone.

Many dental graduates and postgraduates in Pakistan face similar hardships and difficulties. Unfortunately, dentistry is a forgotten and neglected profession in the country. It seems to be low on the government’s agenda, if at all.
