Walter Martos Ruiz, former president of the Council of Ministers, died

This Tuesday, the death of Walter Martos Ruizretired major general of the Peruvian Army and former president of the Council of Ministers, aged 67.

Born in Cajamarca on February 10, 1957, Martos devoted much of his life to military and public service. During his distinguished military career, he held key positions as director of the Chorrillos Military School, commander-in-chief of the Northern Military Region and chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. In 2013, he decided to retire from active military life.

In the political sphere, Martos Ruiz played a decisive role during the government of Martín Vizcarra. In October 2019, he assumed the position of Minister of Defense, a position he held for ten months. Later, in 2020, he was appointed president of the Council of Ministers after Congress rejected the vote of confidence of the cabinet led by Pedro Cateriano.

The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) expressed regret today for the death of the former President of the Council of Ministers and former Minister of Defense, Major General PE (r) Walter Roger Martos Ruíz, at the age of 67.

“His extraordinary work during the COVID-19 pandemic sets an example of service. Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” PCM said on its social media.

Also, the Ministry of Defense expressed its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the former president of the Council of Ministers.

“We are very sorry for this loss that mourns the Defense sector and our country”, says Defensa.
